- This article is about the anime character. For the manga counterpart of the same name, see Ryuga (manga).
Ryuga (竜牙, Ryūga) is a character that appears in the Metal Series anime. He debuts as the main antagonist of the first season, Beyblade: Metal Fusion. As the series progresses, Ryuga largely remains independent of the main cast, although he often assists them against a common enemy.
In Beyblade: Metal Masters, Ryuga returns with his newly evolved Meteo L-Drago LW105LF, which he evolved on his own through intense training and mastery of L-Drago's power.
In Beyblade: Metal Fury, Ryuga inherits one of the Star Fragments, becoming a Legendary Blader and evolving his Bey into L-Drago Destructor F:S. He is also one of the Four Season Bladers, holding the power of the Summer Constellation. He is joined by Kenta Yumiya, who attempts to convince him to join the main cast to defeat Nemesis.
In Beyblade: Shogun Steel, Ryuga does not appear following the events of Metal Fury, except for a brief cameo of his silhouette.
Appearance
Ryuga is a muscular young man with spiky white hair, amber eyes, and a slim build. Ryuga's attire consists of a black and gold tank top underneath a white coat, along with black pants. Ryuga is never shown wearing his coat with his arms in the sleeves.
Two unique accessories are Ryuga's crown and gauntlet, which he carries L-Drago inside of. The crown and gauntlet are artifacts from the Dragon Clan, of which Ryuga is a part of.
Personality
Ryuga's personality is initially cruel and sadistic, and he seemed to enjoy terrorizing other Bladers. Ryuga enjoyed attacking his enemies' Beys until they were utterly defeated, and was shown to cocky, believing himself superior to other Bladers. As a result, Ryuga had no tolerance for what he viewed as weakness, including his own allies such as Doji. Ryuga was also shown to enjoy taunting his opponents, such as when he taunted Gingka over his father's supposed death. Following his defeat by Gingka at Battle Bladers, Ryuga makes the Dark Power his own through training, and largely loses the crueler aspects of his personality.
By Metal Masters Ryuga is less cruel and more mellow, and prefers to be alone. After gaining more power with L-Drago through training, Ryuga values strength even more, in contrast to his prior cruelty. Ryuga still retains his rage, which is shown when he decides to attack Hades Inc. during the season finale, purely out of spite rather than a desire to help Gingka.
In Metal Fury, Ryuga's personality remains largely the same as it was in Metal Masters, and Ryuga refuses to join the other Legendary Bladers, in favor of increasing his own personal power through training. He also desired to take the power of Nemesis to increase his own and become the strongest Blader. However, after Kenta joins Ryuga on his training journey, Ryuga warms up and becomes empathetic, eventually sacrificing himself and giving Kenta his Star Fragment.
Biography
Beyblade: Metal Fusion
Ryuga was a former member of Dark Nebula and the ultimate rival of Gingka Hagane. He was defeated by Gingka only once; for all of the other battles against him, Ryuga came out on top, making him legendary. He was the strongest member in the Dark Nebula, being the one who owned the Forbidden Bey. He was a Legendary Blader as well, specifically part of the Bladers of the Four Seasons as the Blader of Summer, where the power of Gaia was separated into the four seasons of Earth and the four Bladers, Gingka Hagane, Kyoya Tategami, Chris, and Ryuga. Ryuga represents the Season of Summer. He later gave his Star Fragment to his new close friend, Kenta Yumiya. Introduced as the main antagonist of Metal Fusion, Ryuga was affiliated with the Dark Nebula Organization, who aided him in the theft of Lightning L-Drago 100HF from Koma Village. This incident served as Gingka's character motivation when Ryuga abandoned his father in rubble after their first encounter. The power of the Forbidden Bey would start to influence Ryuga, making act sadsitic in battle and eventually consume him, draining his energy and turning Ryuga into a monster.
Beyblade: Metal Masters
After being defeated by Gingka in battle Bladers, Ryuga would begin a journey of redemption and eventually tame Lightning L-Drago, becoming Meteo L-Drago LW105LF in the process. He mentored Tsubasa Otori during Metal Masters who was struggling with his dark power and even acted as a temporary reserve member during the Beyblade World Championships for Team Gan Gan Galaxy for their match against Jack of Team Star Breaker. He even helped Gingka stop the Spiral Core.
Beyblade: Metal Fury
During Metal Fury, Ryuga was revealed as a Legendary Blader, specifically one of the Bladers of the Four Seasons representing summer. He finds a travelling companion in Kenta Yumiya, who would become Ryuga's closest and only friend. The two traveled for a few times, battling in tournaments and such as well as being present when Nemesis was revived. After giving his piece of the Star Fragment to Kenta after his loss to Rago, L-Drago disintegrated and the Dragon Emperor himself disappeared. It is unknown whether Ryuga and L-Drago survived after passing on the Star Fragment to Kenta and Sagittario (with the latter having evolved into Flash Sagittario 230WD).
Beyblade: Shogun Steel
While Ryuga did not make any physical appearances in Shogun Steel, he did make a few cameo appearances; he was either a silhouette or mentioned in a conversation. Ryuga is also thought to be the one who gave his successor, Sakyo Kurayami, the Bey Ronin Dragoon LW160BSF. He also appeared in a flashback where he was battling against Rago in Metal Fury as Doji explained how he surved.
In the ending of Shogun Steel's Japanese version, at the last moment during a battle with Zyro Kurogane and Kira Hayama, a cloud that takes the shape of L-Drago can be seen, possibly hinting that Ryuga may return in any sequel to the series.
Beyblades
- Lightning L-Drago 100HF: Ryuga's primary Beyblade in Beyblade: Metal Fusion.
- Meteo L-Drago LW105LF: Ryuga's primary Beyblade in Beyblade: Metal Masters. Ryuga obtained this Bey after intense training and his subsequent mastery of the Dark Power.
- L-Drago Destructor F:S: Ryuga's primary Beyblade in Beyblade: Metal Fury. Ryuga obtains this Bey after a Star Fragment embeds itself in L-Drago. It is destroyed following its battle with Nemesis.
Special Moves
Lightning L-Drago
- Dragon Emperor Soaring Bite Strike: Ryuga's first "Dark Move".
- Dragon Emperor Soaring Destruction : Ryuga's second "Dark Move" in the anime. He only used it when he was under the control of L-Drago's Dark Power.
Meteo L-Drago
- Dragon Emperor Supreme Flight: Ryuga's third special move in the anime. He first used this move against his battle with Zeo in The Plot Thickens, and then in The Dragon Emperor Descends effortlessly defeating Jack with it.
L-Drago Destructor
- Dragon Emperor Supreme Flight: Ryuga's second version of the third special move in the anime. It is inherited from Meteo L-Drago, and is thus more powerful than its original incarnation.
- Dragon Emperor Life Destructor : Ryuga's fourth special move in the anime. Unlike most Special Moves, it is referred to as an "Ultimate Move". He first used this move in Showdown! The Tower of Babel to defeat Tsubasa and his Earth Eagle.

Relationships
Gingka Hagane
Being one of Gingka's two main rivals; the other being Kyoya, Gingka and Ryuga have been rivals from the start. At first, Gingka has shown a deep hatred to Ryuga for stealing the Forbidden Bey, Lightning L-Drago from his village that was in a volcano and thought him responsible for trapping his father during Dark Nebula's raid at Koma Village. Although defeating Gingka on numerous times, Gingka finally defeated him and the power of L-Drago that was controlling him was let out, leaving Ryuga to be. Although Gingka and Ryuga do not completely hate each other, they are not friends but rivals. Sometimes, Ryuga can be an ally to Gingka where as in Metal Fusion his ultimate goal was to absorb all of Gingka's and Pegasus' power, but overall, he is Gingka's ultimate rival
Kyoya Tategami
Due to the two being Gingka's rivals they both share hatred for each other. Kyoya also harbors Jealuosy over the fact that Ryuga beat Gingka when he couldn't, while Ryuga thinks Kyoya is strong, but inferior compared to Gingka. The two battled twice in the saga with Ryuga winning each time. They also share an arrgont personality and were both used by Doji.
Kenta Yumiya
Although Ryuga and Kenta have not made much, if not any interaction in Metal Fusion and Metal Masters, where Ryuga never even notices Kenta, they have made some sort of relationship in Metal Fury. As Kenta went following Ryuga in order to convince Ryuga to help Gingka to find the rest of the Legendary Bladers, traveling from mountains to jungles. Kenta would not give up and soon enough, finally convinced him. Although Kenta is somewhat scared of Ryuga's actions, such as his "sixth-sense" they have developed a friendship. In episode 134, Ryuga says to Kenta that he had never taken Kenta seriously.
Kenta cared about Ryuga as he helped Ryuga to not give into Nemesis' dark power and was concerned for him when he was trapped in the temple's rubble of Diablo Nemesis' "Armageddon" Special Spin Move. He was also worried for Ryuga during his rematch with Rago, and was the first to run inside when he saw Nemesis battling L-Drago. He then saw Ryuga being smashed backwards from Armageddon. He ran to Ryuga only to find him unconcious and severely injured, and was shocked by the fact that he was dangerously close to death.
Ryuga trusted Kenta so much that he gave him his Legend Blader power to defeat Nemesis, causing Flame Sagittario to evolve into Flash Sagittario.
Doji
Doji and Ryuga have been partners ever since they were in the Dark Nebula organization. They worked hand-in-hand and would do anything to search for Forbidden Bey, Gingka Hagane, and strong Bladers so Ryuga could defeat them and absorb their energy. Despite the fact that Doji did everything for Ryuga,he would soon steal Doji's energy through L-Drago in the semi-finals of Battle Bladers, because Ryuga thought that Doji kept giving him strong Bladers for Ryuga to get the energy as Doji thought he wasn't strong enough. Doji claimed he didn't but Ryuga ignored this and took his energy without mercy, destroying Dark Wolf in the process and ending their relationship forever.
After Doji's return in Metal Fury, Ryuga called him an evil person, probably out of anger at the nightmare he had been put through. Doji taunted and made fun of Ryuga about how he was used as a mere tool to help Nemesis take over the world. At first Ryuga told Doji not to think he can provoke him, but then got provoked anyway.
Quotes
- (Ryuga's first dialogue in the series) "Heee! Well, long time no see, Gingka Hagane!"
- "I'll say it a thousand times, your father couldn't cut it! If the father isn't tough enough, what do you think the son will be like? The same, so grovel at my feet like your father did!" (Ryuga to Gingka) (episode 13 "Metal Fusion")
- "However! I can't remember anyone taking so many of my direct hits without completely collapsing. I'll give you credit for that!"
- "You're not an eagle. You're a...CHICKEN!!!!!" (Ryuga to Tsubasa)
- "You call that children's magic show the Dark Power? Don't make me laugh!"
- "That being said, I have gotten my hands on a new power. One that makes the old Dark Force look like a toddler throwing a tantrum!"
- "There is only one reverse rotating bey that may exist in this world. Only one! This Meteo L-Drago alone!"
- "Gingka. I will not allow you to lose to those fake Bladers the next match. Do you understand what I'm saying?"(Ryuga to Gingka in Episode 42 "Metal Masters")
- "Be careful what you poke with a stick, it just might bite you!" (Beyblade Metal Masters Episode 88)
- "Don't get all misty on me. I just came to settle the score with a ghost from my past."
- "I alone managed to beat back the Dark Power, and succeeded in drawing out L-Drago's ultimate ability, and I harness the true power that I gain by putting my very life on the line to be the best I can be in my battles!"
- "In the end, you're nothing but a caged bird. Thinking you've become stronger from the pet food you were given and believing you could defeat the Dragon Emperor. It's just hilarious!" (Ryuga to Jack)
- "That one time, it was only for a brief shining moment, I became serious. I promised. TAKE IT, KENTA!!!"
Trivia
- In the anime, Ryuga's final fate is left ambiguous, with a final shot of Ryuga at the end of Metal Fury after his disappearance. However, Ryuga never established a relationship with Kenta in the manga, and thus does not sacrifice himself in the final battle against Nemesis. As such, he is still alive in the Shogun Steel manga.
- Metal Series creator Takafumi Adachi has stated that Ryuga's fate in the anime is only known to the team that worked on the anime storyboards.[2]
- Takafumi Adachi has stated that both Ryuga's surname and actual age are a mystery.[3]
- While having Meteo L-Drago, he often hand-spun his Bey at weaker opponents, instead of using his launcher. He did this to demonstrate his Bey's spin-stealing ability.
- This technique would also later be done by Free De La Hoya of the Beyblade Burst series.
- Ryuga's equipment remained unchanged throughout the entire series, consisting of the same BeyLauncher L, Launcher Grip, and Beypointer set up.
- The reason Ryuto refers to Ryuga as "brother" is because they are both from the Dragon Clan.
- He is one of the few characters in the Metal Series to have his Bey's Spirit change appearance, others being Reiji Mizuchi and Chao Xin.
- His Shogun Steel counterpart is Sakyo Kurayami, who can also be considered his spiritual successor.
- While Ryuga's outfit did not change throughout the anime, his manga attire changed between Metal Fight Beyblade and Metal Masters, eventually matching the anime.
- Ryuga was undefeated during Metal Masters, with Meteo L-Drago LW105LF being one of the few Beys, and the only L-Drago Bey, to have a perfect win record.
- Ryuga is one of only two Bladers to have used a Dark Move instead of a Special Move, the other one being Reiji.
