Max first appeared to save a dog from drowning, since Takao was unable to do it by himself. They both become good friends later though. Max invited Takao to his father's house, which happens to be a hobby store. After looking around the shop, they had a friendly beybattle which Max won. He then entered the Japanese regional championship with Takao and Kyouju and qualified for the semi-finals. He was however beaten by Kai, even though he used innovater tricks. During that match, we learned that he had a necklace containing the Genbu bit chip, which was given to him by his mother. Although he lost, he was placed on the BBA team by President Daitenji.

From then on, Max traveled with Takao, Kai, Rei and Kyouju around the world to compete against many beybladers. He always played a defensive strategy though, therefore he did not play as often as other beybladers on his team.

During his childhood, his parents, Judy Mizuhara and Taro Mizuhara, divorced, leaving Max with his father in Japan. His mother went to live in America to work on the Project Power Beyblade (PPB). In the manga, it is clear that Max would prefer not really approaching the subject of his mother, as he snaps a picture of her away from Takao's hands. He felt very betrayed when team BBA visited the PPB installations and that they discovered that Judy was really against them; Max had not seen his mother in years and now that he did, she turned out to be his enemy. Throughout the whole American tournament, Max kept thinking about this issue and how they were going to compete against the PPB All Stars in the finals. He did not really want to take the victory out of his mother's reach, even though he knew that was the right thing to do. He just really wondered why he was never asked to join his mother's team, why she never spoke about her activities. His determination amplified his forces and made him win against the captain of the PPB team, Michael Summers. He was initially not supposed to fight him in the last match of the tournament, but Kai understood his intentions and let him take his place. After his victory, his mother and him reunited.

Besides this experience, Max is usually very cheerful. He is optimistic and likes to take the time to enjoy some moments in life. Takao and him get along well as both of them are not necessarily serious all the time... For instance, in the first season, when the were on a ship to get to London, Max was swimming/playing in the inside pool and he kept encouraging Kyouju and Takao to join him.

Another important fact to know about Max is that he loves mayonnaise (which was changed for mustard in the dub, for some reason, even though the bottle of condiment is obviously too light yellow to be mustard). He puts some on basically everything he eats, including noodles and meat (that already has sauce on it).

In Beyblade 2002, Max was also attacked by a Saint Shield blader in the beginning, which lead to him meeting up with Takao again. The more Mariam and him met and battled though, the closer they got, resulting in them being friends in the end. Once, Max was fighting a beyblade sent by Dr. B to capture Genbu and Mariam came to fight the enemy with the Tyrannosaurus bit beast by Max's side. Dennis, the Psykick blader, however backs out before the match is over. Afterwards, they had to find a way out of the battlefield, seeing as the cellar of the building they had been battling in crumbled under the hits. Max and Mariam help each other get to the surface and tend to the bruises and cuts they received.

Before that incident, Max and the other members of team BBA took a plane to New York to help Judy about the Ancient Rock issue. While they were there, Max heard about a local Beyblade tournament taking place soon, so he registered. He was very shocked to discover that his childhood friend, Alan McKenzie, also was competing in this tournament. At first, both were very joyful at the idea of meeting again and battling as friends. That view however changed when team BBA discovered that Alan was working for an organisation that wanted to steal the Ancient Rock. Max and Alan settled that their fight in the tournament would decide Alan had to explain himself or not. Although the match was quite even for a while, Max was victorious and, after learning the truth, he forgave his friend.

In the final championship of Beyblade 2002, Max teamed up with Takao.

At the beginning of the third season, Max really felt like joining his mother's team for once, in order to have a chance to defeat Takao in the championship. Therefore, after announcing his departure, he went back to America and met his tag-team partner, Rick Anderson. At first, the two did not get along well despite Max's efforts to make friends with Rick. However, the more they talked, won and lost, the more Max was able to teach him that beyblading was also a question of honour, not just being the strongest and beating all your opponents. This is a major difference between those two teammates: while Max came back from a loss against one of his former teammates with the satisfaction that he did his best, and content that he had faced them, Rick was very frustrated whenever he or Max lost a battle. The former members of team PPB All Stars who did not make the team in the qualifying rounds were more distant towards Max and Rick.

After the championships, Daichi was upset that Takao was getting all the glory for winning his battle against Kai, so he decided to leave to wander the cities on his own. Max met him and invited him to his house, where they had supper. Max started putting mayonnaise on all his food, then offered some to Daichi. He ignored the latter's protests and put the condiment on Daichi's plate as well ...

The tournament being over, Max joined Takao again. Once they heard that the BBA had been sold and that President Daitenji was on the streets, they investigated on the matter and went to the new association's opening. Daichi, Takao, Max and Kyouju met Ming Ming and challenged her and her band as they could not believe that she was BEGA's best beyblader. The band was easily defeated. They then discovered that Volkov was the director of the new organisation. He invited them to visit the building, and he tried to prove that he had changed for good now. Max explained to Daichi Volkov's history.

After making Justice 5 official, Takao needed a team of five players. Max, Rei and Daichi were obviously going to be part of the team, yet they still battled against the beybladers from the other teams to prove themselves and help the others distinguish themselves from the rest.

When the time came for Max to fight Mystel in Justice 5 though, everyone pressured him to win his match, even his friends (Team G Revolutions already had two losses; one more would have meant BEGA's immediate victory). Max fell prisoner to that stress and became very upset over the fact that nobody believed in his strenght. Kyouju and the others even suggested him to change his trademark defensive battle style. Once, he stormed off into the washroom to cool down. On his way back to his team's room, he met Volkov, who put even more pressure on him. The head of BEGA wanted Max to win so it did not appear to the public that BEGA was too strong. Max then met Rick, who invited him to eat him something before his match. At first, Max was reluctant to go with his ex-teammate. Later, seeing that Max was not eating his food, Rick started telling him that he should not abandon his blading style, because that is what he exceeds in. Slightly more confident in himself, Max fought Mystel and managed to draw, giving team G Revolutions another chance to beat team BEGA. To prepare Takao to his upcoming match(es), Max and Daichi practiced with him and sometimes even beat the champion.

Max's father, Taro Mizuhara, owns the Mizuhara Hobby Shop. Since it is full of Beyblade parts, stadiums and other equipments, Max has almost direct access to any item to help him improve his beyblading. He offers some of them to his friends.

In the manga, he created an accessory which allows him to easily carry his Beyblade stuff everywhere he goes. It consists of straps that surround his torso and that are equipped with small pockets.

'Max' is a popular American name. 'Mizuhara' is a Japanese surname meaning 'wilderness of water'. 'Tate' is more of an English name, meaning content, happy, delightful.
